Current and previous projects implemented by GCI RWANDA

Empowering rural communities to cope with climate change effects through clean cooking and improved cooking stoves; implemented in Bugesera, Ngoma, Rwamagana and Kirehe districts, a project funded by FONERWA/ Rwanda Green Fund

Promoting solar powered irrigation, conservation tillage and agroforestry to enhance Bihari communities’ resilience to climate change in Bugesera District/ Funded by UNDP-GEF-SGP

Environmental management and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA): implemented in Bugesera district, the project so far has reached 1,210 people with more than 120ha of protected land and we intend to scale up to 1468 (18% increase) people in the last phase of project/ Funded by UNDP

Empowering small farmers through cooperative formation:  GCI has facilitated farmers to form cooperatives and trained them on environmental management, farm enterprise development, entrepreneurship and cooperative management in Rulindo district, Mbogo and Shyorongi sectors. The project has reached 4 cooperatives and 126 members/ Funded by AWDF

Advocating for at-risk youth, women and other vulnerable groups to ensure their social protection for their involvement in natural resources protection and cultural well-being. Area of implementation of these activities was Rulindo district in Bushoki, Rusiga and Shyorongi sectors. The project has so far reached 454 beneficiaries and these may increase/ Funded by NED-USA

Strengthening the capacity of citizens and support them to engage with one another and with local authorities to improve institutional accountability in service delivery and promotion of democracy. These activities are also being implemented in the Rulindo district, Rusiga sector (in all cells and villages), the project has reached 516 local authorities, representatives of civil societies organization (CSO) and private sector. The project intends to reach out to 1200 beneficiaries and partners in the second phase/ Funded by NED-USA

Climate change adaptation: we have established the nurseries of different tree species and we have facilitated tree planting. We have planted out more than 65,200 seedlings of forestry and agro-forestry trees. We have distributed more than 300,000 seedlings of trees to farmers to be planted on their plots. Over the next five years GCI will continue to intervene in these areas / Funded by INTAMBWE-SPC

School greening and formation of environmental club, whereby 1400 students have been trained in environment management
